Many nonprofit organizations have missions to make the community better. The programs and services they provide often address complex social issues—like poverty, violence, hunger, child welfare—that tend to disproportionately impact members of oppressed groups based on race, class, sex, gender, sexual orientation, ability status, and more.
NCCJ St. Louis is proud to partner with nonprofits to help them meet their obligation to provide equitable, culturally responsive programs and services to all of their clients, employees, and constituents. NCCJ tailors its programs to meet the needs and goals of different nonprofit organizations.
Youth In Need, is an example of a local nonprofit addressing diversity in a thoughtful and sustainable way.
- In 2011, Youth In Need administration approached NCCJ about training in support of their internal diversity initiative.
- Late summer 2012, the organization scheduled a 3-day Building Inclusive Communities (BIC) workshop series for all staffed employed in a supervisory role, helping to establish a common framework and language for engaging diversity in service of their mission to build on the strengths of children, youth and families so they find safety, hope and success in life.
- In 2013, NCCJ presented an introduction to the diversity training to the organization’s board of directors, delivered additional BIC workshops to direct staff in some of its key programs, and facilitated a teachable moment when a conflict around diversity arose in another program.
- For 2014, the organization is sponsoring its first candidates for NCCJ FaciliTrainer Certification, in order to build capacity to sustain its diversity initiatives with powerful, skilled internal training and dialogue.
